A relaxing 6 days in GSNP , with our good friends Tim and Sue, as we scaled Mt LeConte again, hiked to waterfalls, biked Cades Cove, and topped it off with a white water rafting trip down the Upper Pigeon river.
we started out with a long 13 hour trip to Gatlinburg, Tenn…
in time to see the fireworks show. outstanding.
This would be out second trip to LeConte.. we did it once before in April 2012.
Sunday started out raining looking, with promises of flash floods. this was an issue in that our reservations at Leconte were non-refundable (and expensive). My co-hikers were undeterred and thus up we went – Rainbow Falls trail (http://www.hikinginthesmokys.com/leconterainbow.htm) – 4000 feet elevation gain over 6.7 miles…… yay?
we made it in 6 hours or so (http://www.highonleconte.com/daily-posts) , and were treated to a great dinner and breakfast (family style), a foggy night, double bunk beds that were not conducive to easy sleeping (when anyone moved, everyone woke up), and even a rendition of Hey Jude (Tim) and Puff the magic dragon (me). great fun.
We came down via Bullhead trail (http://www.hikinginthesmokys.com/lecontebullhead.htm ) on Monday and headed to our very nice accommodations for 4 nights.
After that, we recovered a bit, with shorter hike, to Laurel falls (http://www.hikinginthesmokys.com/laurel.htm ), the Cades Cove biking, Clingman’s dome (zzzz) , and white water rafting (my Chimney Top exposed hike was overruled – dang http://www.hikinginthesmokys.com/chimney.htm )
On the long trip home, foamhenge (http://www.thefoamhenge.com/ ) was a delight
And of course, no trip would be complete without some heartfelt DYB’s.
