The germination of the idea for a trip to Kauai came from a Motion episode about hiking the 11 mile Kalalau trail. Since that hike involves much toil and then camping, that was not going to happen. But we got our taste of the Kalalau trail via the hike to Hanakapiai falls. it is 2 miles from the trailhead to Hanakapiai beach, then 2 miles inland to the falls. and then back again for a total of 8 miles. Slow going… a long day.. but absolutely great. Some of the hike was in the rain and much was in the mud, which made it all the more an adventure.
We started out early, at the trail by 8am… it was cool to finally see the sign for the Kalalau trail.
The first two miles are tough. the trail climbs quickly, but you are rewarded with initial views down the Napoli coast. that keeps you going.
We made it to the beach! time to ford the stream and rest a bit on the beach. and a snack.
And then – it was time to hit the trail to the falls. It would be a trail mostly along the stream, thru some mud, and with little pink ribbons in the trees to guide us (which we figured out halfway there).
We found a huge stand of bamboo, which I pretended was in a scene from LOST pilot.
And after quite a bit more slogging, we made it to the falls, just in time for a swim and a series of DYB’s.
Well – we had made it.. now it was time to head back. only this time, we knew what it entailed. yay . we made it back down to the beach.
View of Hanakapiai beach, from the air, one week later .
And then explored a small sea cave
and then it was time to ford the stream again, and head back to the car
