Wiki: A triathlon is a multi-sport event involving the completion of three continuous and sequential endurance events. While many variations of the sport exist, triathlon, in its most popular form, involves swimming, cycling, and running in immediate succession over various distances. .
During the week of June 25, the first annual Acadia triathlon was held, pitting the mighty Mahler’s vs the young whipper-snappers – the Coyles. As usual, it involved 3 events:
1. A swim (actually a kayaking adventure)
2. A bike ride
3. A marathon run (actually a short hike, but it was uphill)
This was to be competed not over one long day, but over the entire week, with lots of sleeping, lobster and beer in-between events. And overnights in an excellent Bed and breakfast in Bar Harbor: http://www.acaciahouseinn.com/
The competition results:
First up was the bike ride, a 20 mile journey over the hills of Acadia on the carriage roads built by John D Rockefeller. Team mahler tried valiantly, but could not overcome the propensity for one of our team members to walk the bike up the hills. Advantage: Coyles
Then, it was time to hike, a strong suite of Team Mahler. The Coyles were left in the dust, as the Mahlers scramble up rocks like a mountain goat on steroids. The coyles were hampered by only having 3 good knees, but we accept no excuses. – Advantage: Mahler
After a night of drinking to excess, it was time for the final event, the kayak tour. The Mahlers started out like Michael Phelps, but quickly were done in by the rain (one of our team members was worried a bit too much about the “hair”). That and the fact that the team captain was feeling a bit woozy (no surprise there)…. The Mahlers clearly lost…. And the Coyles were a finally tuned machine…. Trouncing the valient Mahlers by multiple boat lengths. Damn – Winner – Coyles !
Despite the loss , a good time was had by all…. And we regret nothing… Even spiking Tim’s water bottle with Guinness.
